Etna Nord: The North-Slope Wineries

When people talk about Etna wine, they are usually talking about Etna Nord. The arc from Linguaglossa through Passopisciaro and Solicchiata to Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia is where the appellation’s modern reputation was built — and where nearly every estate that opens its doors to visitors happens to be.

The imbalance is measurable

The first map of Etna’s contrade catalogues 142 named parcels across 11 municipalities, and they are not evenly spread. Castiglione di Sicilia has 41. Randazzo has 25. Linguaglossa has 10 — seventy-six between just those three northern communes.

By comparison, Santa Maria di Licodia on the southern slope has one and Biancavilla has five. That is why a page about visitable Etna wineries spends most of its time on the north: there is simply more there.

Why the wine tastes different up here

Northern vineyards sit higher and cooler, which generally produces more structured reds with firmer acidity. The southern flank is warmer and tends toward riper, fruitier wines. Neither is better; they are different expressions of the same DOC, and tasting one after the other is the fastest way to understand what contrada actually means. More in the Etna DOC guide.

The visitable estates above Linguaglossa sit at around 900 metres. Across the appellation vineyards run from roughly 400 metres to well over 1,000 — among the highest in Europe — and on the loose volcanic soils a good number of old plots are still ungrafted, because phylloxera never took hold.

The cheapest way in

The Etna Nord tasting at Linguaglossa — $49, ninety minutes. A welcome glass of white, a sommelier-led walk over 25 hectares and then eleven metres underground to the cellar, with a walkway above the barrels where the explanation happens. Four current vintages with hard-boiled egg, the estate’s own extra-virgin olive oil, preserves in oil and Sicilian cheeses.

Getting up here without a car

There is no public transport up the Mareneve road, and while the Circumetnea railway reaches the villages it does not reach the estates. So it is a tour or a taxi.

When to come

September and October, while the harvest is running — Nerello Mascalese is picked latest of all, usually the second or third week of October. The season guide covers the rest, and the north-slope small-group departures are the first to fill in that window, so check availability early.
