How Much Food Comes With the Wine

Every Etna wine tour includes food. The question is how much, and it is the single biggest driver of price on this mountain — a cheese plate is included almost everywhere, a hot course adds around $20, and a full cooked lunch adds $80 to $120.
The three levels
An aperitivo comes with even the cheapest tasting: Sicilian cheeses, the estate’s own extra-virgin olive oil, preserves in oil, bread, often a hard-boiled egg. It is a genuine plate of food, but it is not lunch.
A hot course turns a tasting into a meal. The premium tasting at Linguaglossa is $71 for five wines plus a seasonal soup or velouté, grilled sausage with baked potatoes and spinach, and a ricotta cannolo — at the estate, no transport included. Our breakdown →

The Taormina food and wine tour — $208, six hours, guaranteed small group, door-to-door pick-up in an air-conditioned minivan.
Two properties. At the first, a family-run winery: a welcome glass, a walk through the cellars, then a tasting paired with organic cheeses, salami, artichokes and other cold appetisers. At the second, a farmhouse with an open-air terrace over the vineyards, where lunch is cooked from seasonal ingredients — pastas with black-pork sauce or whatever the day’s fresh sauce is — followed by more tasting plates, dessert and a homemade limoncello.

The city alternative
The urban winery in Catania — $73, ninety minutes, inside the city. An estate that has farmed the same walled vineyard since 1790, a shared Sicilian table, and three courses cooked from the host’s grandmother’s recipes: antipasti, a pasta or rice primo, a meat or fish secondo. Four Etna wines — the Vigna Grande red plus a sparkling, a white and a rosato.

Lunch on a volcano day
The Catania Etna and Alcantara tour ($110) and the Taormina equivalent ($157) both include a sit-down winery lunch with Etna wine. It is a real meal, and it is one course of an eight-hour day built around craters and a lava cave — the food is good, but the day is not about it. Compare formats in the which tour guide.
