Mount Etna Wine Tasting in December
Planning an Etna wine tasting in December 2026? Winery hours and Christmas closures, December weather and daylight, price examples and day plans from Taormina or Catania.
Yes, you can go wine tasting on Mount Etna in December. Several estates take visitors through the month, and a cellar tasting with lunch is one of the nicest things to do in eastern Sicily in winter. December is a poor month for turning up unannounced, though: holiday closures, reservation rules, short afternoons and changeable mountain weather all affect the day.
From Taormina or Giardini Naxos, the easiest December booking is the half-day guided tasting at Gambino: $67 for about five hours with hotel-area pickup, four wines and a cheese-and-preserves aperitivo, 4.70★ from 679 reviews. Gambino keeps taking tastings until 31 December and closes from 1 January to 16 March, so December is the last month for this one until spring.

For a December trip, book one daytime tasting with a cellar visit, add lunch if you like, and keep any upper-volcano plans flexible. One confirmed winery and a relaxed lunch make a better December day than three stops you have not confirmed.
December wine tasting on Etna at a glance
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Are Etna wineries open in December? | Some are. Donnafugata opens every day except Monday; Palmento Costanzo opens daily except Christmas Day. Other estates work by reservation. |
| Is December a good month for wine tasting? | Yes, for the wines and the cellars. Less so if you want green vines, the harvest or long vineyard walks. |
| What is the weather like? | Catania averages about 17°C by day and 7°C at night, with about 79 mm of rain over 8 rainy days. Wineries several hundred metres higher are colder. |
| Does it snow? | Snow is possible high on Etna, but not at a given winery. The coast, the vineyard belt and the summit have different weather. |
| Which dates need extra care? | 8 December (public holiday), 24–26 December and 31 December. Check each estate’s own closures. |
| Can you go from Taormina or Catania? | Yes, on a booked tour or with a driver. Check the December departure calendar and the winery named in the itinerary. |
| When should the tasting start? | Late morning or early afternoon, so you still have daylight for the drive back. Sunset is about 4:40 pm. |
Our guide to Etna wine tours in winter covers November to February as a whole. This page sticks to December: the weather, the dates, the estates and the tour formats you can book.
Is December a good time to visit Etna wineries?
December suits you if you care most about the wines, the people who make them and the old cellar buildings. Etna’s reds are made mainly from Nerello Mascalese, its whites (Etna Bianco) from Carricante, and producers talk a lot about how the wines change from one slope and vineyard district, or contrada, to the next.
A winter tasting gives you time to compare these styles without the harvest bustle or a packed summer schedule. You can ask how altitude, exposure and volcanic soil shape each wine while you taste indoors, and you do not need perfect weather for a vineyard walk.
Set your expectations before you go:
- The vines are dormant. You will see bare rows with no grapes on them. On a clear day the winter landscape is still dramatic.
- There is no harvest to watch. Picking on Etna usually runs from late September into October, depending on altitude and vintage.
- Tasting hours can be shorter. Cellar work continues even on days when visitor tastings do not run.
- The best part may be indoors. A restored palmento, a barrel cellar or a tasting with local food beats an exposed terrace in a cold wind.
Who should choose December? Wine lovers, couples, food-focused travelers and anyone already spending a winter week in Sicily. If you picture lush vineyards, sunny outdoor tastings and the harvest, pick another season. Our best time for an Etna wine tour compares the months.
What is the weather on Mount Etna in December?
December weather makes more sense in three zones: Catania and the coast, the vineyard slopes, and the upper volcano.
| December in Catania (lowland averages) | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Average daytime high | 17°C / 63°F |
| Average overnight low | 7°C / 45°F |
| Monthly rainfall | about 79 mm / 3.1 in |
| Rainy days (1 mm or more) | about 8 |
| Sunset in mid to late December | about 4:40 pm |
These are not a forecast for a winery. The figures come from a station close to sea level near Catania, while many vineyards sit several hundred metres higher. A tasting room near Linguaglossa or Randazzo can be colder, wetter, windier or cloudier than the city on the same day, and a crater excursion is a different winter activity altogether.
December is one of the wetter months here, but the average does not mean rain all day, every day. A bright morning can turn into a cold, windy afternoon. Check the forecast for the winery’s village, not only for your hotel in Taormina.
Will Mount Etna be snow-covered in December? It can be, especially higher up, but snowfall changes from year to year and week to week. A white summit is possible on the day, but no wine tour can include it. Snow or ice high on the volcano does not mean a lower winery is cut off either.
Short afternoons change the plan
With sunset at about 4:40 pm, a day that combines a drive, viewpoints, a cellar tour and lunch runs out of light quickly.
A late-morning tasting usually works best. Take vineyard photos before or after lunch while it is still light. Do not plan around a sunset tasting unless the operator confirms it runs in December.
Which Mount Etna wineries can you visit in December?
These estates are good starting points, but a published visiting policy is not a confirmed slot on your date. Check the live booking calendar or get written confirmation before you arrange transfers.
| Winery | Area | What is published for December | Why consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Donnafugata Etna | Randazzo, north Etna | Every day except Monday, 10:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00; shop only until 13:00 on 24 and 31 December; closed 25–26 December | Clear schedule, set tasting times, cellar and tasting room |
| Palmento Costanzo | Passopisciaro, north Etna | Daily 10:00–18:30; closed Christmas Day | Restored historic palmento, indoor tasting, food options |
| Benanti | Viagrande, southeast Etna | Tuesday to Sunday upon reservation | Winemaking history and a guided estate tasting |
| Murgo / Tenuta San Michele | Santa Venerina, east Etna | Winter lunch service 12:00–14:00; no evening service November–April | Food-and-wine lunch with a cellar tour |
| Tornatore | Castiglione di Sicilia, north Etna | Bookable tasting formats; December dates on request | Classic Etna wines or a contrada tasting |
| Gambino Vini | Linguaglossa, northeast Etna | Tastings until 31 December; closed 1 January to 16 March | Panoramic vineyard terrace and the Taormina half-day tours |
| Etna Urban Winery | San Gregorio di Catania | Annual break 15 December to 15 January; open Tuesday to Saturday, 1–7 pm, before that | A lunch tasting near Catania in early December only |
Donnafugata: the clearest published calendar
The Donnafugata Etna visitor page says the Randazzo winery takes visitors all year, every day except Monday, 10:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00, with tours and tastings at 11:00, 13:00 and 16:00. Reservations are required.
For December, its published exceptions are short: the shop opens only until 13:00 on 24 and 31 December, and the winery is closed on 25 and 26 December. In January it closes on 1 and 6 January. On 24 or 31 December, ask whether a guided tasting runs or only the shop is open. Mondays in December 2026 fall on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th.
The estate lists Etna da bere (wine only, €35) and Brunch Etneo (wine and food, €45) at 11:00, among other formats. In December the cellar and indoor tasting room are the draw; an outdoor vineyard walk depends on the weather.
Palmento Costanzo: historic cellar and food pairings
The Palmento Costanzo tours page offers tastings in a restored wine-making building in Contrada Santo Spirito, near Passopisciaro. Its Wine & Food Experience page lists daily opening from 10:00 to 18:30, with closures on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Easter.
A visit can take in the old palmento, a tasting and food pairings. The normal itinerary includes a walk in the vineyard, so ask what replaces it in heavy rain. Dates that are not on the closure list, such as 8, 24 or 26 December, still need a booking.
Benanti: an option from the Catania side
Benanti’s hospitality page gives its hours as Tuesday to Sunday upon reservation, with visits in Italian and English at the nineteenth-century estate in Viagrande. The visit combines family history, an old palmento, the barrel room and a guided tasting. The page does not list December holiday dates, so ask about yours.
Benanti suits you if you are staying in Catania or the southeastern foothills. Book a specific experience and ask how much of it is indoors if the forecast looks poor.
Murgo: a good winter lunch
At Murgo’s Tenuta San Michele restaurant, 500 m up on the eastern slope, lunch runs 12:00–14:00. From November to April the restaurant closes in the evening unless a group of at least 20 books ahead.
Murgo’s five-wine food-and-wine menu costs €60, and the cellar tour is included at 11:00, 12:30 and 3 pm. That makes lunch the natural December format. When you book, say you want the tasting menu with the cellar tour, not only a table.
Tornatore and Gambino: check your date first
Tornatore offers a classic tasting with four wines and dry snacks, a pairing with local cured meats and cheeses, and a contrada selection. It does not publish a December calendar, so book through its system or write to the estate.
Gambino Vini states that it cannot take tastings from 1 January to 16 March because the winery is closed. If your trip straddles New Year, taste at Gambino in December. The notice does not promise every December date, so check the exact day, especially around Christmas.
Etna Urban Winery: closed for the second half of December
Etna Urban Winery, the walled estate on the edge of Catania, opens Tuesday to Saturday from 1 to 7 pm and takes an annual break from 15 December to 15 January. Its Sicilian lunch with four wines ($70, 4.92★ from 88 reviews) works in the first two weeks of December; after the 14th, plan a winery on the slopes instead.
For a wider shortlist, including estates that are not realistic winter stops, see our best Mount Etna wineries guide, and for each estate’s November-to-February schedule, the list of Etna wineries open in winter.
December 2026: Christmas and holiday dates to check
Italy has two public holidays in December, and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve bring their own short hours. A public holiday is not an automatic winery closure: each estate sets its own schedule.
| Date in 2026 | Day | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1–7 December | Tue–Mon | Normal tasting weeks, apart from each estate’s weekly closed day. Etna Urban Winery is still open. |
| 8 December | Tuesday | Immaculate Conception, a public holiday. Donnafugata does not list it as a closure; confirm any booking. |
| 9–14 December | Wed–Mon | Ordinary December days. Last week for Etna Urban Winery before its break. |
| 15–23 December | Tue–Wed | Good pre-Christmas days. Etna Urban Winery is closed from the 15th; the Etna Wine Bus season ends on the 20th. |
| 24 December | Thursday | Christmas Eve. Donnafugata’s shop opens until 13:00 only; ask whether a guided tasting runs. |
| 25 December | Friday | Christmas Day. Donnafugata and Palmento Costanzo are closed. Plan a day without a winery. |
| 26 December | Saturday | St Stephen’s Day, a public holiday. Donnafugata is closed; check the others. |
| 27–30 December | Sun–Wed | Appointments are possible, but holiday staffing matters. Donnafugata is closed on Monday the 28th. |
| 31 December | Thursday | New Year’s Eve. Donnafugata’s shop opens until 13:00; last day for Gambino tastings before its winter closure. |
1 January 2027 is a public holiday too: Donnafugata and Palmento Costanzo are closed, and Gambino’s closure begins. Donnafugata also closes on 6 January. For a day-by-day plan from 20 December to 6 January, see our guide to Etna wine tours at Christmas and New Year, which also covers Christmas Day alternatives and the dates to book first.
The official list of Italian public holidays is on the Italian Government’s ceremonial page.
Which December wine tour should you book?
Do not choose only by the number of wines in the listing. In December, the format and the venue matter more than in a dry, warm month.
1. Winery-only tasting: the best fit for a changeable forecast
Best for: wine lovers, couples, first-time tasters and anyone who does not want to give a whole day to the volcano.
A good December booking gives you a set time, a host, an indoor tasting space and a clear list of wines, often with a cellar tour. You arrange your own transport unless the ticket includes a transfer. This format works well between rain showers, when the tasting itself is why you are going.
Our pick: the Etna Nord tasting at Gambino in Linguaglossa, $47 with no transfer, 4.85★ from 55 reviews. It runs at Gambino, so book it for December; it is unavailable from 1 January to 16 March.
2. Winery tasting with lunch: a strong December choice
Best for: travelers who like food pairing, a slower pace and a day that still feels good when the scenery is cloudy.
A wine-and-food visit can mean a board of Sicilian cheese and cured meats or a full seated meal. “Food included” does not always mean lunch. Check the menu, dietary arrangements, duration and whether the cellar tour is part of it. Murgo and Palmento Costanzo each sell their own food-led formats directly, and dates vary.
Our pick: the food-and-wine day from Taormina, $200 for six hours with pickup from your accommodation, 4.85★ from 455 reviews. It costs three times the Gambino half-day, and you pay for the pickup, the guide and a full meal.
3. Two-winery tour with transfers: only with both stops confirmed
Best for: people who want to compare two producers without driving after tasting.
A two-winery day is fun, but allow time for winter roads, lunch and the short afternoon. Two estates on the same side of Etna make a better day than a loop around the volcano to fit in a longer list. Check that the tour runs on your date and ask whether a winery could be swapped. A listing that says only “local winery” does not promise a named estate.
Our pick: the small-group two-winery tour from Taormina, $162, 4.84★ from 110 reviews.
4. Volcano plus wine: for a broad Etna day, with no summit promised
Best for: first-time visitors to Sicily who want lava landscapes and wine, and will still enjoy the day if the mountain part changes.
A combined trip can include lava fields, viewpoints, a low crater walk and a winery stop. Snow, wind, rain, volcanic activity and access restrictions can all change the mountain route, and a tasting booked lower down does not guarantee the upper mountain. Ask your operator what happens if the summit section is closed. If the high volcano is the priority, check Funivia dell’Etna and the official access updates close to your date.
Our pick: the Catania volcano, wine and Alcantara day with lunch, $106, 4.84★ from 557 reviews. From Taormina, the full-day Etna, wine and Alcantara tour costs $151, 4.83★ from 528 reviews.
Our Etna wine tour price guide compares every format side by side.
How to plan a December wine-tasting day from Taormina
From Taormina or Giardini Naxos, head for north Etna. The villages around Linguaglossa, Castiglione di Sicilia, Passopisciaro and Randazzo hold many of the best-known producers.
A relaxed day (sample timings, not a booked tour):
- Morning: leave Taormina with a booked transfer or on a tour that lists your pickup point. Allow extra time for winter roads.
- Late morning: a confirmed cellar visit and tasting at a north-Etna estate.
- Early afternoon: lunch at the estate if it offers one, or in a nearby village once you have checked its winter hours.
- Mid-afternoon: a short village or viewpoint stop if the weather allows, and back before dark.
If the forecast is poor, drop the outdoor stop and keep the tasting and lunch. If your tour normally visits Gambino, December is fine; from 1 January the estate is closed.
Our wine tour from Taormina guide compares pickup types and itineraries.
How to plan a December wine-tasting day from Catania
From Catania, decide between Viagrande and the southeastern foothills, Santa Venerina and east Etna, or a longer drive north. A shorter route leaves more time for the cellar and a slow meal.
A food-and-wine day (sample timings):
- Morning: a booked transfer toward Viagrande or the east side of Etna.
- Late morning: a winery with a confirmed indoor tour or guided tasting.
- Lunch: a booking that includes a food-and-wine menu, or a separate restaurant table.
- Early afternoon: back to Catania, or one short sightseeing stop before the light goes.
If the tour includes volcano viewpoints, treat the winery as the fixed part of the day and the mountain scenery as a bonus that depends on the weather. Before 15 December, the urban winery lunch is the short option inside the Catania area; after that date it is closed until mid-January.
Our Etna wine tour from Catania guide covers the transfer-inclusive and volcano options.
Can you visit an Etna winery without a car in December?
Yes, with planning. Wineries are spread across rural slopes. A bus to a wine village does not get you to the estate gate, and winter timetables rarely fit an appointment.
Your options:
- A tour with return transfers: the simplest choice from Taormina or Catania if you want to taste without driving.
- A private driver: more flexible for a tasting you booked yourself, or two estates. Confirm pickup, waiting time and the return beforehand.
- Self-drive with a designated driver: fine if someone is not drinking and is comfortable on rural roads in wet weather.
- Public transport plus a booked taxi: possible for some estates, but do not expect a taxi to be waiting in a small village after a winter tasting.
Never walk into an estate without a reservation because its website says “open.” Most of the interesting visits are guided and need a booked time.
How much does Etna wine tasting cost in December?
There is no December tariff. The price depends on how many wines are poured, whether food or a cellar tour is included and, above all, whether transport from your hotel is part of the booking.
Examples from the estates’ own pages, checked on 6 November 2026:
| Example | Published price | Transport included? |
|---|---|---|
| Donnafugata Etna, Etna da bere | €35 per person | No |
| Donnafugata Etna, Brunch Etneo | €45 per person | No |
| Palmento Costanzo, Welcome Di Sei | From €50 per person | No |
| Palmento Costanzo, Through our Contrade | From €65 per person | No |
| Palmento Costanzo, Palmento at the Table | From €75 per person | No |
| Palmento Costanzo, Here we are at Santo Spirito | From €80 per person | No |
| Murgo, five-wine food-and-wine menu with cellar tour | €60 per person | No |
These prices do not mean a December slot is free at that price. Confirm the date, the menu, the final total and any minimum group size when you book. A guided day from Taormina or Catania costs more, from $67 for the Gambino half-day to $200 for the food-and-wine day, because it adds pickup, a driver and often lunch.
Our Etna wine tour prices guide compares the tours; check the live price for your date before you pay.
What to wear for a December Etna winery visit
A cellar visit needs no hiking gear, but the drive and the walk between buildings can be cold, wet or windy. Pack for the highest and most exposed stop of the day; Catania’s afternoon temperature is a poor guide.
- Warm layers, with a jacket that keeps out wind and rain.
- Closed shoes with grip for wet paving, gravel and volcanic ground. Waterproof shoes help if the day includes a vineyard or volcano stop.
- A compact umbrella or waterproof shell for the walk to the tasting room.
- A hat and gloves if the tour goes higher up Etna.
- Your phone with the booking confirmation, the estate address and the return-transfer details saved offline.
Etna excursion operators recommend a winter jacket, long trousers, a warm hat and sturdy waterproof shoes from November to March; that advice applies to volcano excursions more than to an indoor tasting. See Go-Etna’s clothing guidance.
What should you ask before booking a December tasting?
A short message heads off most winter surprises. Copy these questions into your email or booking note:
- Can you confirm a guided tasting for [date] at [time]?
- Is the tasting room indoors, and what changes if it rains?
- Does the booking include a vineyard walk, a cellar visit and food, or only wine?
- If food is included, is it a snack board, a light lunch or a full meal?
- Can you cater for our dietary needs and any non-drinkers?
- Is there a holiday closure or a special December schedule on that date?
- Are pickup and return included? If not, how should we get there?
- What is the cancellation or rescheduling policy if bad weather hits?
For a Christmas-week visit, ask about holiday opening before you book a non-refundable transfer. For a volcano-and-wine tour, ask whether the winery stop still runs if the mountain section changes.
Frequently asked questions
Are Mount Etna wineries open in December?
Some are. Donnafugata opens every day except Monday, with its shop open only until 13:00 on 24 and 31 December and the winery closed on 25 and 26 December. Palmento Costanzo opens daily except Christmas Day. Benanti, Murgo and Tornatore take bookings, but confirm your exact date. Etna Urban Winery closes from 15 December to 15 January.
Can I go wine tasting on Mount Etna at Christmas?
Not on Christmas Day. Donnafugata and Palmento Costanzo are both closed on 25 December, and Donnafugata stays closed on the 26th. On 24 December Donnafugata’s shop opens only until 13:00. Book a tasting for 22–23 or 27–30 December.
Is 8 December a good day for an Etna wine tour?
With a confirmed booking, yes. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is a public holiday in Italy. Donnafugata does not list 8 December as a closure, but other estates set their own rules, so confirm before you travel.
Is Etna too cold for wine tasting in December?
Not usually. Indoor tasting rooms are comfortable, but the vineyards sit far higher than Catania and are often colder and windier. Dress in layers; a volcano excursion needs proper winter clothing.
Does it snow at Etna wineries in December?
Snow is possible higher up, but not at a given winery. The summit can look white while a winery lower down has rain or sunshine. Do not count on snow in a tasting itinerary.
Can I visit Etna wineries from Taormina in December?
Yes, on a confirmed departure. North Etna is the natural direction from Taormina and Giardini Naxos. Check the pickup point, the named winery, the appointment and the return time. Gambino-based tours run in December but not from 1 January to 16 March.
Can I book an Etna wine tour from Catania in December?
Yes, depending on the date. A tasting on the southeast or east side works well, especially with lunch. Check whether the tour is wine-first or mainly a volcano trip, and remember that Etna Urban Winery is closed from 15 December.
Is December better for Etna Rosso or Etna Bianco tastings?
The month does not change what you can taste. Both are poured all year from bottled vintages. Ask for a tasting with both Nerello Mascalese-based Etna Rosso and Carricante-based Etna Bianco if you want to compare them.
Can I do a vineyard walk in December?
It depends on the winery and the weather. Some visits include a short vineyard section that rain or wind can cut. Book a visit you would still enjoy if the walk is shortened or skipped.
Should I book an Etna winery or a volcano tour in December?
Choose a winery-first visit if wine is the priority and you want a day that depends less on mountain access. Choose a volcano-and-wine tour if you want a broader Etna day and can live with weather changes.
Is Etna wine tasting a good idea in December?
Yes, if you plan around the winery’s calendar, not the season in general. December is a lovely time for a cellar-led introduction to Etna Rosso, Etna Bianco and Sicilian food. It is quieter and cooler than a summer vineyard trip, and less predictable if you want a particular outdoor activity or travel over Christmas.
For the easiest December outing, pick one estate, book a late-morning or early-afternoon slot, add lunch if it suits you and arrange the ride back. On a tour from Taormina or Catania, check the live December calendar and read the inclusions: the named winery, the food and the weather policy.
