"we absolutely loved this trip, you get to do so much and our guide, Francesco was so knowledgeable about everything and his English was perfect! we loved hiking Etna, the lunch and wine were delicious and filling and it was also a highlight getting to see the Alcantara gorge in the same day (and worth it in August to cool down). we got picked up and dropped off at our hotel and the transport was lovely and air-conditioned. would highly recommend this trip!"

How a Catania Departure Works
From pick-up to the last pour.
Pick-up near your accommodation
Full-day tours collect you close to your Catania hotel in an air-conditioned van. The urban winery is self-drive, with an optional paid shuttle from the centre April to October.
Up the mountain, or across the city
Volcano tours climb the north-eastern flank to the walking area. The urban winery is a short taxi ride inside Catania itself, on ground the volcano built.
Craters and cave, or cellar and table
Either a two-hour walk at around 2,000 metres with a naturalist guide and a lava cave, or a sommelier-led history and a shared Sicilian table.
Wine, then home
Full days finish with a winery lunch and the Alcantara gorge before dropping you back. The urban winery leaves the gardens and vineyard open to you afterwards.

Choosing an Etna Wine Tour from Catania
Why the south side has fewer cellars, and what to book instead.
Catania is already on Etna. The city is built on its lower southern flank out of the volcano’s own basalt, and that changes the calculation compared with Taormina: you are nearer the mountain, but further from the vineyard land the appellation is famous for.
What that means in practice
Etna’s visitable estates cluster on the north slope — Linguaglossa, Passopisciaro, Solicchiata, Randazzo, Castiglione di Sicilia. The southern flank above Catania has real vineyards but far fewer cellars set up for visitors.
So a Catania departure does one of three things: it drives round to the north side anyway, it pairs the volcano’s craters with a winery lunch, or it stays local at one of the properties in and around the city. Each is a legitimately different day.
The three that are worth booking
Etna, wine and Alcantara — $110, eight hours, 522 reviews. The guide is a naturalist rather than a coach host, and the day runs from a crater walk at around 2,000 metres through a lava cave with helmet and lamp to a sit-down winery lunch and the basalt gorge of the Alcantara. Boots, jacket, helmet, lamp, entrance fees and insurance are all included — request the footwear at booking. Our breakdown →
The urban winery — $73, ninety minutes, inside Catania. An estate that has farmed the same walled vineyard since 1790, a sommelier on how wine was made here three centuries ago, and a shared Sicilian table: antipasti, a pasta or rice primo, a meat or fish secondo, poured with four Etna wines. Registration at 12:45, lunch at 13:00 sharp, and the gardens and vineyard are yours afterwards. Our breakdown →
The private three-winery day — $325 for the group, six and a half to seven hours. Three family-run estates, ten wines, a sommelier at each, food throughout, and hotel or cruise-port pick-up, which makes it workable as a shore excursion if your ship’s all-aboard allows. Our breakdown →
The honest gap
If pure wine is what you want and you are staying in Catania, you have fewer good options than someone in Taormina. Two fixes. Book the urban winery and treat it as a long lunch rather than a tour. Or drive — Linguaglossa is a little over an hour, and a north-slope cellar tasting is $49. Both are covered on the Etna Sud and Etna Nord pages.
Getting up the mountain without a car
There is a daily AST bus from Catania to Rifugio Sapienza on the southern side, leaving at 8:15 am from Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII opposite Catania Centrale and taking about two hours. It goes to the cable-car station, not to any winery. The Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway circles the volcano from Catania and passes through the wine villages — lovely, cheap, and suspended on Sundays and public holidays.
For the reasoning behind each format, see which Etna wine tour is right for you, or check availability.

"It was perfect!!! Great live guide. Beautiful scenery, a great lunch, and great value for the money!!!!"

"We were picked up by Andrea in a small van. The location was easy to find, very close to where we were staying. Andrea was a great guide. He knew so much about the geology of the area. MT. Etna was actively erupting, which was pretty amazing to me. Andrea was very easy to understand and interesting along the hike. The hike is not too difficult, although it was extremely hot while we were in Sicily. Bring water and if you don't have good treads on your athletic shoes, take the boots that they offer. We stopped at the lunch place before the hike to use the bathroom and get the boots. The path has some steep parts and you will be glad to have the traction, especially on the way down. The views are spectacular! lunch at the Emilio Sciacca winery was very good and the other family we were with was very pleasant. It isn't one of those big wineries where there are busloads of people. Bring water shoes for Alcantara, it is very rocky."

"Great trip. The guide knew just where to go on Etna to get us incredible views and was very knowledgeable. Lunch was excellent, and the canyon was nice and cool. Don’t expect to be able to go too far up the canyon, though. People from the canyoneering tour company were preventing people who didn’t pay for their tour from going up the fun part."
"Wonderful day! Andrea was knowledgeable and so patient. Loved visiting the cave, hiking up Etna, the winery lunch and walking in the gorge. A must if visiting that area."

"Very fun. The food offered was excellent and, above all, the guide was very good. Highly recommended."

"Mirko, our guide, was very knowledgeable and friendly. Everything was impeccable. I highly recommend this experience!"
"We had a wonderful day with Andrea. Lunch was also plentiful, and the wine was very tasty. Thank you very much!"

Etna Wine Tours from Catania — FAQs
What leaves Catania, where it actually goes, and which side of the volcano you end up on.
For a full day, the $110 Etna, wine and Alcantara tour — 522 reviews, a naturalist guide, a crater walk at around 2,000 metres, a lava cave, a winery lunch and the Alcantara gorge. For wine without the volcano, the $73 urban winery inside the city serves a three-course Sicilian lunch with four Etna wines at an estate that has farmed the same walled vineyard since 1790.
It is closer to the volcano than Taormina but further from the best-known vineyard land, which sits on the north slope. So Catania tours either drive round to the north side anyway, combine the craters with a winery lunch, or stay at one of the properties in and around the city. All three are covered here.
Catania sits on the volcano's lower southern slopes — you are already on Etna in the city. The southern mountain base at Rifugio Sapienza is about two hours by the daily AST bus, or well under an hour by car. The north-slope wine villages are further, around an hour and a quarter.
The full-day tours do — pick-up and drop-off near your accommodation in an air-conditioned van. The urban winery does not: you make your own way, though a shuttle from the city centre can be arranged for an extra fee from April to October if you request it in advance.
Etna Sud is the southern flank above Catania — Belpasso, Ragalna, Biancavilla, Nicolosi — and has far fewer cellars open to visitors. Etna Nord is the northern arc around Linguaglossa, Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia, where most of the appellation's reputation and nearly all of its visitable estates sit. Compare south and north.
Yes, and from Catania that is the most common booking. The eight-hour Etna and Alcantara tour includes a guided crater walk at about 2,000 metres, a lava cave with helmet and lamp, and a sit-down winery lunch with Etna wine. Trekking shoes and a jacket are included free if you ask when booking.
From $73 for the urban winery lunch to $110 for the full-day volcano-and-wine tour, rising to $325 for a private car with three estates. See the price guide.
One, and it is unusual. The urban winery in Catania has a sandbox and small trampoline for younger children, a reading and painting corner for older ones, and a treasure-hunt map on request. Most other Etna wine tours either exclude under-18s or simply run too long.
Cellar tastings run in almost any weather. The tours that combine wine with a crater walk are the ones at risk — the upper mountain closes in high wind or snow and operators reroute rather than refund. Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead applies to everything compared here.
Not for the wine-only tours. For the full-day Etna and Alcantara tour, trekking shoes, a jacket, a helmet and a lamp are all included — but the shoes and jacket only appear on the van if you requested them at the time of booking.
